N\u00e9 \u00e0 la fin de l’\u00e9poque victorienne, Ernest Hemingway ne connaissait au d\u00e9part que le monde protestant o\u00f9 il a grandi, non loin de Chicago. Plus tard, alors qu’il sert dans le corps ambulancier de la Croix-Rouge am\u00e9ricaine en Italie pendant l’\u00e9t\u00e9 1918, l’\u00e9crivain en herbe d\u00e9couvre la richesse du catholicisme avec tous ses sens. Il s’impr\u00e8gne de l’amour de Marie et de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 r\u00e9demptrice de son fils J\u00e9sus et les grandes cath\u00e9drales europ\u00e9ennes qu’il visitait soulignant cette r\u00e9alit\u00e9. Il n’avait que dix-sept ans. Cette exp\u00e9rience le transforma.<\/p>\n

Hemingway servait au front \u00e0 Fossalta, en Italie, le long du Piave, pr\u00e8s du c\u0153ur de l’action, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 il voulait \u00eatre. Touch\u00e9 par un obus de mortier dans une tranch\u00e9e, Hemingway perdit connaissance. Alors qu’il attendait d’\u00eatre transport\u00e9 \u00e0 la gare pour \u00eatre \u00e9vacu\u00e9 vers l’h\u00f4pital, ne sachant pas s’il allait survivre, il \u00e9tait \u00ab\u00a0vraiment effray\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb, \u00e9crivit-il des ann\u00e9es plus tard \u00e0 son beau-p\u00e8re Thomas Welsh, et pria \u00ab\u00a0avec une foi presque tribale\u00a0\u00bb pour l’intercession de \u00ab\u00a0Notre Dame et de divers saints\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Hemingway \u00e9tait arriv\u00e9 en Europe peu apr\u00e8s la derni\u00e8re apparition de Notre Dame de Fatima aux trois petits bergers \u2014 Lucie, Fran\u00e7ois et Jacinthe \u2014 au Portugal, le 13 octobre 1917. Ces apparitions \u00e9taient, pour Hemingway, le plus grand attrait du catholicisme. Il les consid\u00e9rait comme une preuve irr\u00e9futable que l’\u00c9glise \u00e9tait la seule vraie foi. Son ami George Herter \u00e9crivait, le 23 f\u00e9vrier 1978\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Hemingway \u00e9tait un fervent catholique. Sa religion lui venait principalement des apparitions de la Vierge Marie. Il m’a dit \u00e0 plusieurs reprises que s’il n’y avait pas la Bible, s’il n’y avait pas de lois eccl\u00e9siastiques cr\u00e9\u00e9es par l’homme, les apparitions prouvaient sans aucun doute que l’\u00c9glise catholique \u00e9tait la v\u00e9ritable \u00c9glise.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
